What? Me, afraid of a little ole’ machine? You’ve got to be joking! Get serious! I’m not afraid of any computer. I just don’t like them. I could learn how to punch those buttons if I wanted to. But I don’t want to, don’t have time, and besides I can always get someone, some nerd type, to do my number crunching. Can’t I? I’m a busy person. Can’t you see? Who wants to spend their life sitting in front of a computer screen, anyway? Not me! It gives me a headache just to think about it. If I want some information, I’ll ask for it. So, don’t bug me about learning any new technology. I’m a leader, not a technocrat. Oh, I suppose I could learn a couple of things, just so I won’t look stupid to my people. There are a few things I really would like to be able to do for myself. You’ve said this thing is user-friendly. What in the world does that mean? Is it going to kiss me?

If you’ve talked to persons who do not use computers, you’ve heard most of the statements above. You may have even said some of them yourself. As with most things, there is a grain of truth in many of the statements. Busy people may have to depend, to a large extent, on others to do their data development and analysis. A leader must not personally become bound to machines and thus avoid interaction with others in the organization. Nevertheless, in a technological age, it is not feasible for an executive to be totally computer illiterate. Furthermore, some analysis problems really should be done by the organization leader.

Learning any new skill, whether it be golf, tennis, or computers, requires some courage to admit in front of colleagues that you do not know or are not good at it. This may be particularly true for an organization leader who is respected, revered, and expected to know everything. Sometimes, it is just a matter of getting beyond that initial phobia and getting into the basic computer uses to change an attitude of reluctance to one of enthusiasm. Let’s begin by getting familiar with the computer. As the fundamental operations are described below, you should be at a computer and should experiment with each one to understand and feel comfortable with each skill.
